RADAR/ADS-B INFORMATIONSERVICE (RIS) TOVFR FLIGHTS IN
CLASSEANDCLASSGAIRSPACE
RIS is available, on request, toVFR flights inClasses E andG airspace
withinATS surveillance system coverage, subject toATCworkload. TheRIS
is available to improve situational awareness and assist pilots in avoiding
collisionswith other aircraft.
Pilotswishing to receive aRISmust be indirect VHF communicationswith
ATC and equippedwith a serviceableSSR transponder for a radar based
service or serviceableADS-B transmitter for anADS-B based service.
VFR pilots receiving aRISwill be providedwith traffic information and, upon
request, position or navigation information.
Note: All information is advisory in nature, and thepilot remains responsible
for the safeoperation of the aircraft. Terrain clearance, aircraft-to-
aircraft separation, and obtaining clearances into controlled airspace
remainpilot responsibilities.
Pilots of VFRflights receiving aRISwill be providedwith information about
ATS surveillance system observed traffic.
However, due to the nature and typeof ATS surveillance system coverage,
not all aircraftwill be detected, and not all aircraft are equippedwith a SSR
transponder or ADS-B transmitter. Consequently, traffic information provided
byATCmay be incomplete. Pilotsmust complywith the see-and-avoid
requirements of CAR163A.
ATCwill provide an alerting service for flights receiving aRIS.
On initial contactwithATC, the pilotmust advise theATS surveillance service
required and, if an ongoing service is requested, include thephrase ‘REQUEST
FLIGHTFOLLOWING’.
WhenATC respond to this request, the pilotmust adviseposition, level, and
intentions.
TheRIS commences onATC notification of identification, andATCmay also
assign a specific transponder code prior to, or during, the provision of theRIS.
If ATC are unable to provide aRIS, the pilotwill be advised ‘SURVEILLANCE
SERVICENOTAVAILABLE’. Requests for emergency assistance shouldbe
prefixedby ‘MAYDAY’ (three times) or ‘PANPAN’ (three times), andwill
receive priority.
