LANDING - PROVISIONOFOPERATIONAL INFORMATION
ATCwill supply the following information for landing operations:
• runway or direction;
• winddirection and speed, QNH and, if required, temperature and/or dew
point;
• known significantweather information, including low cloud and visibility or
runway visual range;
• a time check (to thenearest halfminute), whenever a time to commence
final is specified byATC;
• the crosswind component on the runway to beused, if this equals or
exceeds 8 kt for single-engined aircraft or 12 kt formulti-engined aircraft;
• the downwind component if a pilot operates downwind;
• aerodrome surface conditions significant to the operation;
• birds and other hazards to aircraft; and
• cautionary advice ofwake turbulence.
SELECTIONOFLANDINGDIRECTION
The pilot in commandmust ensure that the nominated runway or direction
is operationally suitable. If the nominated runway or direction is not suitable,
ATCmust be advised using thephrase ‘REQUIRERUNWAY(number)’. Such a
requestwill not result in of loss of priority provided that it ismade:
• before reaching 80 nm (120 nm for jets) from a capital city aerodrome
(includingEssendon) or 30 nm from other controlled aerodromes, for
arriving aircraftwhollywithin controlled airspace; or
• onfirst contactwithATC for arriving aircraft entering controlled airspace
within thedistance specified aboveor a control area stepor a control zone.
The decision to land rests solelywith the pilot in command.
SELECTIONOFCIRCUITDIRECTION
A pilot in commandmust notifyATC if a particular turn or circuit is essential to
the safe operation of the aircraft. ThewordREQUIREmust be used to enable
ATC to identify the safety requirement.
