VISUALAPPROACH
ATCAUTHORISATION
Criteriaunderwhichvisual approachesmaybeauthorisedbyATCareas follows:
• for a VFR flight by day and night, the aircraft iswithin 30 nm of the
aerodrome.
TRACKINGREQUIREMENTS
Tracking requirements for a visual approach include the following:
• a pilot in commandmustmaintain track/headingon the route
progressively authorised byATC until:
- by day, within5 nmof the aerodrome; or
- by night for a VFR flight, within3 nmof the aerodrome and the
aerodrome is in sight.
• from this position the circuitmust be joined as directed byATC for an
approach to the nominated runway.
MINIMUMALTITUDEREQUIREMENTS
For VFR flights during the conduct of a visual approach, a pilotmust descend
as necessary to:
- by day operate not below the lowest altitudepermissible for VFR flight
(CAR157).
- by nightmaintain not less than the lowest altitudepermissible for VFR
flight (CAR 174B) until the aircraft iswithin3 nm of the aerodrome and
the aerodrome is in sight (AIPGEN 3.3).
When conducting a visual approach, a pilot in commandmust not climb above
an altitude reported toATC as having been reached or left, unless authorised
to do so.
