All footwearwornbyaircraftservicingpersonnel andpersonsoperating fuelling

equipmentshall beofanon-sparking typeandsuchpersonsshall notcarryany

matches, cigarette lightersorotherobjectswhichcould representan ignitionhazard.

Exceptwhere automatic shut-off devices limit the capacityof an aircraft fuel

tank, theoperator and thepilot in command shall ensure that sufficient airspace

remains ineach fuel tank to allow for anticipated fuel expansion.

When a fuellingoperationon an aircraft hasbeen completed, thepilot in

command and theoperator of the aircraft shall ensure that all fuel andoil tank

caps are securely refitted.

Aircraft oil tanks shall not bedrainedor filledwhen the aircraft is inside ahangar

or other buildingunless theoilingequipment used complieswith theprovisions

of Appendix I of CAO20.9.

SAFETYPRECAUTIONSEXTERNALTOANAIRCRAFTDURINGFUELLING

OPERATIONS

The area inwhich fuellingoperations are carriedout shall be clearlyplacarded

as a `NoSmoking’ area and the limitsof this area shall be a sealedbuildingor

at least 15metres (50 ft) from the aircraft or ground fuellingequipment.Where

mobile fuellingequipment isused, theequipment shall be soplaced that it can

be rapidlymoved in theevent of fire.

Aperson shall not, and thepilot in command and theoperator shall take

reasonable steps toensure that apersondoesnot, during fuellingoperations:

• smokeor use anakedflamewithin15metres (50 ft) of the aircraft and

ground fuellingequipment;

• except in the caseof aircraft, operate an internal combustionengineor

anyelectrical switch, battery, generator,motor or other electrical apparatus

within15metres (50 ft) of the aircraft’s fuel tankfillingpointsor vent

outlets, andground fuellingequipment unless theengine, switch, generator,

motor or apparatus complieswith theprovisionsof Appendix I toCAO20.9

andhasbeen inspected.

Twoormore fire extinguishers of approved type and capacity shall be

positionedwithin 15metres (50 ft) but not less than6metres (20 ft) from

the aircraft and the fuelling equipment exceptwhere two ormorefire

extinguishers are carried on the fuelling equipment.Where so carried thefire

extinguishers shall be fittedwith quick release brackets, be readily available

fromeither side of the equipment and be located as far as practicable from

the vehicle fuel tanks and fuelling points.
