PilotActivatedLighting (PAL)

When a flight is planned to land at night at an aerodromewithPAL and

standby power, an alternate is required unless a responsible person is in

attendance tomanually switch on the aerodrome lighting.

This alternate need not have standby power or standby portable runway

lighting.

AlternateAerodromes - PAL

An aerodromemay benominated as an alternateprovided that, if the aircraft

is fittedwith a singleVHF communication, the alternate aerodromemust be

onewhich is:

• served by a lighting systemwhich is not pilot activated; or

• served by PAL and there is a responsibleperson in attendance to

manually switch on the aerodrome lighting.

For PVT, AWK andCHTR night VFRoperations, where the alternate

aerodrome is served by PAL, there is no requirement for a responsible person

on the ground to be in attendance, but the aircraftmust beequippedwith;

• dual VHF; or

• singleVHF andHF communications and carries 30minutes holding fuel

to allow for the alerting of ground staff in the event of a failureof the

aircraft’s VHF communication.

AerodromeLighting–TimesofActivation

When aerodrome lighting is required andPAL is not being used, thepilot in

commandor operatormust ensure that arrangements have beenmade for

the lighting to be operating during the followingperiods:

• Departure: from at least 10minutes beforeETD to at least 30minutes

after take-off

• Arrival: from at least 30minutes beforeETA to the time landing and taxiing

has been completed.

The above shall apply to runway, obstacle and taxiway lighting.
