alternates

For night VFR flights youmustmake provision for flight to an alternate

aerodrome in accordancewith the following paragraphs.

When a flight is required to provide for an alternate aerodrome, any

aerodromemay be so nominated for that flight provided that:

• it is suitable as a destination for that flight; and

• it is not an aerodrome forwhich an alternatewould alsobe required.

ALTERNATESBASEDONRADIONAVIGATIONAIDS

A flight permitted to operateunder theVFR at nightmust provide an alternate

aerodromewithin one (1) hour flight time of thedestination unless:

• the destination is servedby a radionavigation aid (NDB/VOR) and the

aircraft is fittedwith the appropriate radio navigation system capableof

using the aid; or

• the aircraft is fittedwith an approvedGNSS receiver, and thepilot and

aircraftmeet the requirements of GEN 1.5.

ALTERNATESBASEDONRUNWAY LIGHTING

PortableLighting

Whenaflight isplanned to landatnight at anaerodromewhere the runway lighting

isportable, analternate is requiredunlessarrangementsaremade for a responsible

person tobe inattendanceduring thearrival anddeparture timesasspecified in

AerodromeLighting - TImesofActivation, toensure that the runway lightsare

available.

StandbyPower

When a flight is planned to land at night at an aerodromewithelectric

runway lighting,whether pilot activatedor otherwise, butwithout standby

power, an alternate is requiredunlessportable runway lights are available and

arrangementshavebeenmade for a responsibleperson tobe in attendance

during the arrival anddeparture times specified inAerodromeLighting - TImesof

Activation, todisplay theportable lights in theevent of a failureof theprimary

lighting.

This alternateneednot have standbypower or standbyportable runway

lighting.
