PROCEDURES FORAIRCRAFTOPERATING INANAIRDEFENCE
IDENTIFICATIONZONE
The following general rules and procedures apply to enable identificationof air
traffic entering any designatedAir Defence IdentificationZone (ADIZ) under
the control of Australia.
AnADIZ is airspace of defineddimensionswithinwhich identification of all
aircraft is required.
When a flight is intended to operatewithin anADIZ, the pilot, unless
exempted in accordancewithpara 4,must;
• lodge a flight notification covering flightwithin theADIZwith the
appropriateATS unit at least 60minutes beforeentry into theADIZ;
• report position toATSwhen passing each position reportingpoint
within theADIZ;
• report position toATS at ADIZ boundarywith a geographical reference
(eg15 nm east of...) or, if the departure point iswithin100 nmof the
ADIZ boundary, report departure;
• report departure if departing from a point in theADIZ;
• maintain a continuous listeningwatchon the communications
frequency of the appropriateATS unit or on another frequency as
directed until the flight is through theADIZ;
• not deliberately deviate from tracks and altitudes filed in the flight plan
unless prior ATC clearance is obtained, or, outside controlled airspace,
notification is given to the appropriateATSunit; and
• activate the aircraft transponderwhenwithin 100nm of theADIZ and
when operatingwithin theADIZ.
The following flights over Australia and its territorial waters areexempted
from compliancewith the requirements of para 3;
• aflightoriginatingwithinanADIZwhichmaintainsasteadyoutbound track;
• a flightwhich remainswithin 10 nmof thepoint of departure;
• aircraft performing published approach, holdingor recovery
procedures; and
• a flight conducted in accordancewith special procedures arrangedwith
theAreaAir DefenceCommander.
