A pilotwho elects to abort a landing shouldmanoeuvre to keepother traffic in
sight.Maintain a safe distance from all aircraft and rejoin the circuitwhen it is
safe to do so.
Straight-inapproaches.
Straight-in approaches,whilst not prohibited, arenot
a recommended standardprocedure. Pilotswho choose to adopt a straight-in
approach should only do sowhen it does not disrupt or conflictwith the flow
of circuit traffic. The pilot, when conducting a straight-in approach,must give
way to any other aircraft established and flying in the circuit pattern at the
aerodrome.
Before conducting a straight-in approach, pilotsmust determine thewind
direction and speed and the runway in use at the aerodrome. There are
several ways to determine thewind direction, speed and runway in use:
• AutomaticWeather Station (AWS), AerodromeWeather Information
Service (AWIS), AutomaticAerodrome InformationService (AAIS), CA/
GRSor UNICOM;
• radio contactwith a ground-based radio communication service, company
agent, approved observer [CAR 120], or aircraft currently operating at the
aerodrome; or
• visual indications if the information cannot be determinedby the above
means.
When conducting a straight-in approach, the aircraftmust be establishedon
final at not less than 3 nm from the landing runway’s threshold. Pilots should
include their intention to conduct a straight- in approachwith their inbound
broadcast. A further broadcast of intentionswhen not less than3 nm from
the runway threshold should also bemade.
Pilots conducting a straight-in approach should observe the following:
• Pilots shouldnot commence a straight-in approach to a runwaywhen
the reciprocal runway is being usedby aircraft already established in the
circuit;
• Within3 nmminor corrections such as normal speed and track
adjustments that arenecessary tomaintain a stable approach are all that
shouldbe required on final approach. Pilots conforming to the circuit
pattern – particularlywhen onbase – should optimise their visual scan for
traffic along thefinal approach path;
