RunwayStrip:

Thedefined area, including the runway (and stopway

if provided), intendedboth to reduce the risk of damage toaircraft

inadvertently runningoff the runway and toprotect aircraft flyingover

it during take-off, landingormissedapproach.

RunwayVisibility (RV):

Thedistancealonga runwayoverwhicha

person can see and recognise avisibilitymarker or runway lights.

Note: The termRUNWAYVISIBILITY is usedbyATCor ground

personnel to report visibility along a runway as determinedby a

groundobserver.

RunwayVisualRange (RVR):

The rangeoverwhich thepilot of an

aircraft on the centre lineof a runway can see the runway surface

markings or the lights delineating the runwayor identifying its centre

line. (ICAO)

Note: WithinAustralia, the term ‘RUNWAYVISUALRANGE’ or ‘RVR’

will beusedbyATCor groundpersonnel exclusively to report

RVRdeterminedby electronicmeans.

SARTlME

: The timenominatedby apilot for the initiationof SARaction

if a report has not been receivedby thenominatedunit.

SARWATCH:

Ageneric term coveringSAR alertingbased either on full

position reportingprocedures, scheduled reporting times (SKEDS), or

SARTIME.

SearchandRescue (SAR):

The act of finding and returning to safety,

aircraft andpersons involved in an emergencyphase.

SearchandRescueRegion (SRR):

The specifiedareawithinwhich

search and rescue is coordinatedby aparticular RescueCoordination

Centre.

SegmentMinimumSafeAltitude:

The lowest altitudeatwhich the

minimumobstacle clearance is provided.

SegregatedParallelOperations:

Simultaneous operations on

parallel or near-parallel instrument runways inwhichone runway

is used exclusively for approaches and theother runway is used

exclusively for departures.

SignificantPoint:

A specifiedgeographical locationused indefining

anATS routeor theflight pathof an aircraft and for other navigation

andATSpurposes.
