MONITORINGOF 121.5MHz
Pilots shouldmonitor 121.5MHz beforeengine start and after shut down (AIP
GEN 1.5). Reception of anELT transmissionmust be reported toATSor the
RCC immediately.
Transmissions from early style supersededmarine styleELTsmay be
identified by breaks on themodulating tone.
CHECKINGELTs
Test transmissions fromELTs shouldbe limited to5 seconds and it is
preferred that such tests be conductedwithin thefirst fiveminutes of the
hour. Before conductingoperational tests operatorsmust notifyAusSAR, and
where the beacon is operated on 406MHz, itsHexIDmust beprovided.
If your ELThas been inadvertently activated formore than 10 seconds you
should contact AusSAR at 1800815 257.
Activation of the test switch results in a transmissionwhich is detected by
COSPAS-SARSAT satellites and by other aircraft.
ELTFREQUENCIES
In addition to 121.5MHz, current ELTsmay also radiateon frequencies of
243MHz and 406MHz.
EMERGENCYUSEOFELTs
