non-TOWERED aerodromes
A non-towered aerodrome is an aerodromewhere air traffic control is not
provided. This can be either an aerodrome that is always inClassG airspace,
an aerodromewith a control towerwhereno air traffic control service is
currently provided or an aerodromewhichwould normally have an air traffic
control service but the service is presently unavailable.
Non-towered aerodromeswhere the carriage of radio is required includes
all certified, registered andmilitary aerodromes as published inERSA. CASA
may designate other aerodromes on a case by case basis, as published in
ERSA or byNOTAM. CAR 243 details the requirements for pilotswhen an
aircraft is fittedwith a radio tomaintain a listeningwatch at all times.
NOTE: Pilots are reminded that non-towered aerodromes include those
aerodromeswithClassC or DATC services during the timeswhen
such services are unavailable. Pilots should always consult theERSA
and latest NOTAMs for operating times of ATC services at those
aerodromes.
Operations at non-towered aerodromes canpresentmany challenges to pilots
who operate into, out of, or in the vicinity of these aerodromes. These can
include:
• complyingwith standard operating procedures;
• fitting into the circuit traffic; and
• dealingwith threats and hazards thatmay be encountered.
Non-towered aerodromes can have amix of passenger-carrying aircraft, IFR/
VFR, smaller general aviation aircraft, VFR agricultural aircraft, and various
VFR sport and recreational aircraft at any one time.
At aerodromeswhere the carriage of radio is notmandatory, good airmanship
dictates that pilots of radio-equipped aircraftwould alsomonitor their radios
andbroadcast their intentions in accordancewith theminimum required calls.
Pilots should also observe local andpublished noise abatement procedures
and curfews.
