ATSCALL–SIGNS
ATS units are identified by the nameof the
location followed by the service available as
follows:
CENTRE
En route area control, includingRIS andFIS.
APPROACH
Approach control where provided as a separate
function.
DEPARTURES
Departure control whereprovided as a separate
function.
FINAL/DIRECTOR
Radar control providing vectors ontofinal
approach.
TOWER
Aerodrome control or aerodrome and approach
control where these services areprovided from
an aerodrome control tower, egCoffsHarbour.
GROUND
Surfacemovement control.
DELIVERY
Clearance delivery to departing aircraft.
RADAR
whereprovided as a separate function in terminal
areas.
FLIGHTWATCH
Flight InformationService.
Thename of the location or the servicemay be omittedprovided that
satisfactory communication has been established.
AIRCRAFTCALL–SIGNS
Improper use of call–signs can result inpilots executing a clearance intended
for another aircraft. Call–signs should never be abbreviatedon an initial
contact or at any timewhen other aircraft call–signs have similar numbers/
sounds or identical letters/numbers.
eg: CHARLIEWHISKY ZULU -WHISKYCHARLIE ZULU.
Pilotsmust becertain that aircraft identification iscompleteandclearly identified
before takingactiononanATCclearance. ATSwill not abbreviatecall–signsof
air carrier or other civil aircraft havingauthorisedcall–signs. ATSmay initiate
abbreviatedcall–signsof other aircraft byusing theprefixand the last threedigits/
lettersof theaircraft identificationafter communicationsareestablished.
