Hey guys,

Please find attached file.

In the answers it says SARWATCH is automatically cancelled for flights arriving in CLASS D. I can't find a reference to this at all? Shouldn't it be that the pilot must cancel after landing by stating the words cancel SARWATCH with the time, arrival location and aircraft REGO?

Thanks

There is a difference between SARWATCH and SARTIME. When a flight proceeds on a full radio reporting basis (such as IFR), it's SARWATCH is provided by the ATS with which the aircraft is communicating. As you call different controllers throughout the flight, each controller accepts responsibility for your SARWATCH. When you land at a controlled aerodrome the tower is the one responsible for your SARWATCH so there is no point in cancelling SAR since he/she just saw you land. A SARTIME is different because, in that case, the person providing your SARWATCH is not the tower controller. If you have nominated a SARTIME, you may request the controller to cancel your SARTIME for you, but he/she wont do that automatically. SARTIME is not normally available for IFR flights except in the case of a departure from an aerodrome where VHF is not available on the ground. I agree it's hard to find a clear reference for this.

Thanks Bob,

This makes a lot of sense in the practical world.

Would you happen to have a link or a reference at all?

Cheers

The definition of SARWATCH in AIP GEN 2.2 page 27, gives a hint but it's still not well explained.

See also AIP ENR 1.10 para 2.2 and 2.3. Still not a clear explanation.

Here's a link from CASA

Cancelling SARTIME (more from CASA).

At the end of your VFR flight, use the phrase 'cancel SARTIME'. Other phrases such as 'cancel SAR' do not clearly distinguish between VFR and IFR flights.

Remember the different rules regarding cancelling your SARTIME. These include:

VFR at a controlled aerodrome: you cannot cancel your SARTIME with the tower. You must call CENSAR on 1800 814 931 to cancel.
VFR at a non-controlled aerodrome: call CENSAR to cancel.
IFR at a controlled aerodrome: your SARWATCH is terminated via ATC at your destination. No need to call CENSAR.
IFR at a non-controlled aerodrome: it is your responsibility to cancel SARWATCH by phone, radio or online.

For VFR flights, the ideal method of cancelling your SARTIME is by calling CENSAR on 1800 814 931.
