I think there was already a thread that bob has kindly answered for me…
But in the final exam question they are talking about searching for a boat… and the fuel to transit there and back was 30 gal… and the question asks for the amount of fuel you have to search from 130gal at take off…
So answer gives 130-15/1.1 then -30….
But if we are to calculate the
Min fuel req to put in the tanks, it is 10% of the trip fuel so 30x1.1.. so how come this time we are not doing 130-15- (30/1.1)

The question says that you are to assume that your operator requires you to carry 10% contingency fuel on all flights. That would include the transit fuel to and from the search area plus the search fuel. So, if you take out the final serve fuel (to need to account for taxi fuel because the question says 130 gallons at take-off), you are left with the trip fuel available. So total fuel available at take-off, less final reserve fuel, divided by 1.1, gives you trip fuel available for the transit and the search. Take out the transit fuel to and from the search area and you have the fuel available for the search.
