BT Navigation Workbook - True, Magnetic and Compass Direction

Hi all,

I'm just working my way through BT's Navigation Workbook.

I'm calculating my True, Magnetic and Compass Directions.

With a few of the calculations I've been out by a degree on the compass directions and I can't seem to find the hard and fast rule.

E.G

Compass Card
N/000 , 030/028, 060/058, E/090, 120/122, 150/152, S/182, 210/212, 240/241, W/271, 300/301, 330/330

True Direction - 229 & Variation 7 W

I've got the Magnetic Direction as 236 and the Compass Direction as 237.

The answer shows the Compass Direction as 238.

My thought process is that were 4 degrees away from 240 reading 241 vs 16 degrees from 210 reading 212.

Therefore I would add 1 degree rather than 2.

I'm pretty sure that CASA's marking system would allocate full marks for that answer. Sensible margins are applied to CASA's 'perfect' answer. It's likely that the variation between magnetic and compass direction is not perfectly linear anyway.

Thank you very much for your resources and practice exams.

I passed the RPL with a 90% pass mark and working towards RPLN now :)
