don created the topic: Hi all,

Another newbie to pilot training and dropping in to say G'day.

I'm an engineer, amateur photographer and UAV (RPA, Drone, pick your term) hobbyist looking to venture into the wild world of UAV commercialism meaning I now need a PPL. I'm thoroughly enjoying the challenge of aeronautical training (a lot of which I'm only slowly starting to come to terms with), and while I can see how it relates to UAV's (OK, maybe excluding things like air bubbles in water filled compasses and cardboard flight computers :-), I am a little surprised at the lack of UAV curriculum especially considering CASA have quite specific requirements in this area (allowable ceilings, distances from airports and people, times of day and line-of-sight requirements etc). Also surprising that CASA are yet to include some Q's on the specific risks posed by UAV's to people and industry (use of high-wattage 802.11 extenders in industrial areas, machine guard types and requirements, obstruction avoidance techniques etc. etc.)

Anyway the PPL training is a lot of fun and if I do well in the exam I probably will take the extra leap into practical pilot training one day.

Cheers all, Don

Gidday Don and welcome to the forums, it's great to have you on board. I certainly agree with you on the irrelevance of the CASA requirements to the UAV people. Who ever came up with it has no idea of the needs of UAV training. Anyway, for now we're stuck with it. We look forward to working with you, so please feel free to use the forum as required - we are here to help.

Have fun!

don replied the topic: Hi all,

Thanks Bob,
This is an awful lot to take in but I'm slowly getting the hang of it :S - It would be great if CASA could setup a forum or similar for input from people currently flying UAV's. Anyway this is a great forum and I'm thoroughly enjoying your books!
Cheers, Don
