Hi Bob and Richard,

My question is in relation to your question on page 3.52 of the July13 version of the IREX STUDY guide. The question asks what is the station and frequency you should call for your airways clearance. We are just outside DME 45 Melbourne CTA cruising at A100 and near Eildon Weir VOR. At this cruising altitude we are in Class E. My question has 2 parts.

1. Your correct answer says we should contact MELBOURNE CENTRE on 122.4 which is actually the frequency we would use if we were in class G, so shouldn't the answer be 123.75? And if we were in Class E wouldn't we already have our airways clearance since Class E is CTA for IFR?

2. Why wouldn't we contact MELBOURNE APPROACH if we are seeking an airways clearance? When do we speak with approach then?

Thanks in advance

Hi Daryl,

You are right, the question needs to be updated and we'll include that in the errata. At A010 you will be in Class E so 123.75 would be the frequency but you would already have a clearance anyway. We will update the stem to question 7 so it states "if you were cruising at A080 ....". That'll fix it :)

As for whether you contact Centre or Approach, you will speak to the controller covering the area you are operating in. Approach controllers may be the ones you talk to directly if you are low enough and their reach extends out to about 30nm usually (looking for an exact reference on that one...). If you are in Class G, you would talk to the controller providing services for your area: Melbourne Centre on 122.4 in the example from this question.

Cheers,

Rich
