Aviatordan created the topic: Logging of I.F time

G'day,

Just an area of curiosity regarding the logging of instrument flight time.

If you are the PIC on a flight above 20 000', which is the level at which an aircraft may no longer be operated under VFR and must be operated under IFR, on a perfectly clear day, can you still log the time above 20 000' as I.F even though it is not in direct IMC?

I'm in two frames of mind on this one, and constantly debating myself is tiring.

Cheers,

Dan

It is no longer above 20000 feet. That was the old rule. Now you cannot fly VFR in Class A airspace. Class A has a lower limit of 18000 feet within radar coverage and 24500 feet outside of radar coverage. it also has lateral limits as shown on the ERCs. Instrument time is the time spent fllying the aircraft by reference to instruments i.e. in IMC. So if you are in Class A airspace and not in IMC, you could not log the time as instrument time.

You could fly VFR above 20000 feet as long as you were not in Class A airspace.
