Hi Bob

This question seems to be popping up quite a bit on the exams from what people have been posting but can’t find a posted answer on this. Please help.

In a centre zero ammeter, the reading is 0. To check if the alternator is functioning what must you do?

a) switch on all electronics
b) this is normal
c) switch off all electronics and see if there is a positive charge
d) switch on all electronics and check for discharge

Thanks

The answer would be (c).
If you turned off all electrical loads, the indication would be just the current flowing to the battery from the alternator and that should be happening all of the time. If the alternator had failed completely, there would be a discharge showing on the centre zero ammeter because it would be supplying the current to the system. It would not be reading zero.
