A very good morning Rich, Bob, fellow winged peoples,
I have worked through the CAAP 234 and summarised it as follows, but before I commit this to memory, would like to get your take on it (that I haven't over simplified it).
For PVT / AWK
Dept - Dest (fuel as required in minutes)
Dest - Alternate (if alternate is required)
Holding Fuel (If required for weather or traffic)
+ 45 mins (Fixed Reserve)
For CHTR
Dept - Dest (fuel as required in minutes)
Dest - Alternate (if alternate is required)
Variable Fuel Reserve ( x1.15 of above)
Holding Fuel (If required for weather or traffic)
+ 45 mins (Fixed Reserve)
I realise this is just a simplistic "round-up" but simple is good and think it should suffice for exam purposes?

Yep Andy that's it and a nice summary of the CAAP recommendations it is too.
Private flights do not require a variable reserve, but why not carry one anyway? The variable reserve applies to the total flight fuel which is flight fuel to your destination + to an alternate if you need one. Tack on holding fuel, allowances and a 45 minutes fixed reserve and you're good to go.
