I hope this message finds you all well.

I am seeking clarification on the application of CAO 48.1 Instrument 2019 Appendix 5 regarding Flight Duty Period (FDP) limits for single-pilot operations that include a split-duty rest period. Specifically, I'd like to confirm my understanding of the maximum allowable FDP under certain conditions.

Scenario:

After a week off duty, a pilot is assigned to commence a single-pilot FDP at 0600 Local Time (LST).
During the FDP, the pilot will have a 4-hour consecutive split-duty rest period with suitable resting accommodation.
Question:

What is the latest time the pilot could be assigned to finish the flight duty period?

Options:

A. 1800 LST
B. 1930 LST
C. 2030 LST
D. 1730 LST
Correct answer is B but when I work it out i get 21:30 LST.....what am I missing?

My Understanding and Answer:

Explanation:

Basic Maximum FDP:

According to Table 1.1 in Clause 1.1 for single-pilot operations starting between 0600 – 0659 LST, the basic maximum FDP is 11.5 hours.
This means, without any extensions, the FDP would end at 1730 LST (0600 LST + 11.5 hours).
Increase Due to Split-Duty Rest:

Clause 2.1 states that if an FDP includes a split-duty rest period of at least 3 consecutive hours at suitable sleeping accommodation, the maximum FDP may be increased by the duration of the rest period.
With a 4-hour rest, the maximum FDP can be extended to 15.5 hours (11.5 hours + 4 hours), ending at 2130 LST.
Limit on Post-Rest Duty Time:

Clause 2.3 specifies that any portion of an FDP remaining after a split-duty rest must not exceed 6 hours.
Therefore, the duty time after the rest period cannot go beyond 6 hours.
Scheduling to Comply with Regulations:

By positioning the 4-hour rest appropriately within the FDP, the pilot can work up to the extended maximum FDP while ensuring the post-rest duty time does not exceed 6 hours.
For example:
FDP Start: 0600 LST
Rest Period: 1130 LST to 1530 LST
Duty End: 2030 LST (0600 LST + 14.5 hours), which is within both the extended FDP limit and the 6-hour post-rest duty limit.
Conclusion:

Given these calculations, the latest time the pilot could be assigned to finish the FDP is 2130 LST.

Could anyone please confirm if my interpretation of the regulations is correct? Any guidance or correction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance.

Warm regards,
Iefan
