Please could I double check which equipment is required for CPL Nav. CASA website stipulates "Navigation equipment".
My thoughts are:
- EB-6 whizz wheel. Is this the recommended one?
- Square navigation protractor.
- Navigation ruler 1:1,000,000 calibrated to NM.
I trust a electronic flight computer is not allowed?
Refer to CASA URL
When permitted, the term 'Nav equipment' includes:
dividers
compass
protractor
ruler (or straight-edge)
non-electronic 'aviation wind triangle and circular slide rule' computer for example Jeppesen Sanderson CR or other brands or a manual slide rule (if the candidate prefers it).
You can use a basic 4-function electronic calculator. Not really necessary unless you prefer it to the nav computer for calculations.
A ‘basic calculator’ has:
four functions (+, -, x and ÷)
square root function ( √ )
single memory - this is a basic accumulator and is worth its weight in gold.
percentage key (%) is optional. - not much use
Suggestions for CPL
(a) dividers are a must have, in my view
(b) compass is not all that useful but you might as well have it
(c) Douglas protractor is a must have (the square unit)
(d) rule is a must have. Either a typical transparent device or one of the nav specific devices with scale to suit maps, etc.
(e) Dalton (E6B) or Jeppesen (CR) according to your preference. A standard slide rule gives you no advantage of note. Never understood why that option is listed. The Dalton is a bit easier to use but there's not all that much in it.
So far as the drawing instruments are concerned, you can get an el-cheapo set from the supermarket or OfficeWorks, etc. The bottom feeder Staedtler set is going for around $5 and you won't get better than that. Not much in the way of drafting instruments but fine for the CASA exams.
For the 4-function calculators, you can pick them up for a few dollars. eg
Suggest you buy two IDENTICAL units and take both into the exam. Why ? If one fails, you just keep going on with the other. No anxiety with an unfamiliar device.
