Morning,

I have just gotten a PPE question that has made me a bit confused.

You are planning to fly fixed wing day VFR from MOORABBIN to HAMILTON (approx.150 nm) ETA HAMILTON 0610Z
TAF YHML 261835Z 2620/2708—FEW008 SCT012
INTER 2703/2706 4000 +RASH BKN010 TCU
Operational requirement(s) in this case are:

I went with Provide for an Alternate or Carry 20H as the ETA was 0610Z (and the INTER finishes at 2706Z) i assumed that you would still be in the 30min buffer explained in AIP GEN 1.1 - 78 para 10.7.2.8

Not sure if im missing something here. If it was a TAF 3 i would completely Agree with the given correct answer of "Provide for an alternate" as the revering conditions are below the ALT minima for VFR.

Thanks in advance.

Hi PWMG,

Check out AIP ENR 1.1-77 para 10.7.2.1 (a) FEW plus SCT is equivalent to BKN.  So reading the first line of that TAF, an alternate is required for the whole duration of the TAF validity period, regardless of the INTER period. A classic trick question from examiners.

Cheers W
