I have no problem with 1 in 60 type question but this one which is from exam 1 Q6
Q6
Refer VFR (Day) Booklet Bourke WAC page 30.
I was hoping to get some help on some exam questions that have me stumped
You plan to fly from NARRABRI (YNBR) (3019S 14950E) direct to ST GEORGE (YSGE) (2803S 14836E).
To avoid clouds after departing YNBR you divert left of planned TR along the YNBR - WALGETT railway line. At WEE WAA township (approximately 20 nm WNW YNBR) you decide to track direct to YSGE. The ARFOR wind for your cruise level is 100/20 kt, and your TAS is 140 kt.
The HDG (M) to steer to YSGE is closest to -
Choose one answer.
338 degrees
331 degrees
145 degrees
340 degrees

My answer is 331 but the correct answer is 338.
Thanks everyone in advance!!
G'day
The original flight planned track is of no interest here. You followed the railway line to Wee Waa township so that's where we begin. Draw a track from Wee Waa township to St George. Measure that track. It is 340°T. The variation is 10°E [ignore the .5].
So the track from Wee Waa to St George = 330°M.
The wind is 100°T [GPWT winds are True]
So the wind to use for the heading calculation = 090°M at 20 knots.
True air speed is given = 140 knots
Use you computer to calculate a heading = 338°M

Thank you for your help Stuart Tait ~~~
The picture I attached shows my way to find the answer.
I can't find anything wrong with my method.
I think the main problem is that the TE which is 44 degree is not applied to 1 in 60 thumb of rule as normally the TE should be less than
30 degree.
