Hi again Bob,

Taken from CAO 20.18 (the important bits)

10.1 - Charter or RPT - all instruments must be serviceable before takeoff unless:

(a) approved by CASA or
(b) is a permissible unserviceablilty and set out in the minimum equiplment list or
(c) CASA has approved the flight or
(d) passeneger convenience only

10.1A - Private or Aerial Work - must not be operated under the IFR unless:

(b) (i) all instruments are serviceable or
(ii) CASA has approved the flight

10.2 then says:

Where a flight is conducted under with unserviceable instruments or equipment under the provisions of paragraph 10.1 or 10.1A ...prominently placarded or removed from the aircraft.

In the book on page 2.4 it states for private or aerial work we cannot just placard the unserviceable equipment we have to remove it. Is this because 10.1A (b) doesn't have the paragraph about it being a permissible unserviceablilty?

In other words, why can we not just placard for private/aerial work. I thought para 10.2 was saying we could do either?
Is paragraph 10.2 only referring to any permissible unserviceablilty providing it is not on the minimum equipment list and not referring to the bit about the CASA approval for the flight to continue?

Confused.
