352 R (my answer is correct, isn't it?)

I wouldn't have thought so.

At 0336,

(a) what is your heading ?

(b) what is the track to the station ?

If you do get out to Dubbo please do pass my fondest regards onto young Dan.

I think I am missing something in here.
At 0336

(a) 105 degrees M
(b) 97 degrees M

If my guess is right, what you missed is an intended subtlety in the question. With flying, the catchcry is "appropriate attention to detail".

At 0336

(a) 105 degrees M - concur

(b) 97 degrees M - now, you told us earlier that the outbound RNC track from Mudgee was 280M. So, what might be the inbound track RNC to (and at) Mudgee ? The CA is 4° so what is the required track to Mudgee ? and what is the ADF relative bearing ?

(Caveat - for the exams we do tend to get into precision that is not there in the real world so, at the end of the day, your answer, from a practical point of view, is fine. For the exam, though, I would expect it to be marked incorrect.)

MDG radial 280
minus closing angle of 4 degrees is 276
Reciprocal of 276 is 96 degrees Magnetic
HAT trick
105 +/- A = 96
351 R is the answer 🙂 ?

That answer appeals.

There are two common approaches to IFR work - the first is continual orientation to a mental picture of the map story (which is the way I think) - and the other is to do all these mental sums (which tend to fatigue me greatly and I go to sleep - which probably is not good ?).

I think it through this way -

(a) at 0336 I note that I must have been asleep not to have noticed what the VOR was trying to tell me and I am 2 dots right - so I have a TE of 4° right (which just happens to be the CA also) and need to turn to the left to fix that.

(b) inbound RNC track is 100M so the track I require is 096M (ie the CA gets figured in)

(c) present heading is 105M

(d) difference is 9° to the left of present heading

(e) so the needle should be pointing 9° left of the nose - ie 351R

Just about as difficult as I need it to be in the cockpit .....
