what type of tab is used to assist a pilot on control movements?

Perhaps you might have a read through this FAA link https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/phak/media/08_phak_ch6.pdf
It probably shouldn't have much more than your textbook but it might explain in a way you can relate to. Worth a read right through it, not just the bit on trim tabs.
