Hi Bob,
Could you please help me on this question from CPL performance (page 61-62). The question was to find the maximum start up weight.
Why are we not adding up the variable and fixed reserves here?

The question says that the estimated flight fuel (fuel burn off) for the flight is 38kg. The maximum landing weight has been established as 2300kg. If you cannot be more than 2300kg on landing, then the maximum take-off weight will be 2300 + 38 = 2338 at take off. The reserves don't come into this calculation.
In fact, it is normal to ignore the reserves in this case, because, as far as landing weight is concerned, the worst case scenario would be NOT burning the reserves i.e. you land with the reserves still in the tanks. If you do burn the reserves it simply means that you will be lighter than you planned when you land.
