Hi Team,

I've been stumped by 2 recent GAF's and would appreciate some help with clarifying them.

GAF 1 - Area covers both land and sea
BKN ST 1000/3000 FT LAND ABV 1000FT FM 09Z

GAF 2 - Area covers both land and sea
SCT ST 1000/3000FT S OF S3700, BKN LAND ABV 1000FT S OF S3700, TL 03Z

The part that I'm not clear on is the the ABV 1000FT. Is the intention to say that the cloud base will be above 1000 feet AMSL over land? I've attached the GAF's for reference.

Thanks!

Gidday Barnard

All heights given in a GAF are AMSL as it's pointless to give heights over land as it all over the place

Cheers

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for your reply.

So if I interpret your response correctly, the highlight portion does indicate that the cloud base will be above 1,000 FT AMSL over land? This would mean that the cloud base can then be anything from 1,000 FT to infinity? Do I then need to plan my flight assuming the cloud base will be at 1,000 FT?

Thanks,
Karl

Yes it is forecast to be above 1000 AMSL

ABV 1000 AMSL.

Do I then need to plan my flight assuming the cloud base will be at 1,000 FT?

Again ABV 1000 AMSL

Cheers
Stuart
