The minimum fuel required at start up alpha is:
A) 59.1gal
B) 60 gal
C) 52.5 gal
D) 55.5 gal
The correct answer is 60 Gallons:
Just want to know what is the best way to calculate this type of question.
Time from alpha to Bravo is 73 minutes
Bravo to chalie is 20 minutes total time is 93 minutes.
93×20=31 Gallons(flight fuel)
(Method 1)
flight fuel- 31 Gallons
variable - 1.15
fixed- 15 Gallons
Holding is 7.5 Gallons
Taxi- 3
Fuel on board@start up 61.15 Gallons
(Method 2)
alpha to bravo= 73×20=24.3 gallons
Flight fuel- 24 3
Variable- 1.15
Fixed- 15
Holding 7.5
Alternate 6.6
Taxi- 3
FOB@start up is 60.045 Gallons
just want a clarification which way is the best way to solve this type of question? either method 1 i followed or method 2?
Thank you

Alpha to Bravo
ETD A = 0420z
TAS = 170; HW = 15; GS = 170-15 = 155kt
Dist = 188; GS = 155 kt;
ETI = 188/155 = 1.21 hr = 73 min = 0113
Trip Fuel = 1.21 x 20 = 24.3 usg
ETA B = ETD A + ETI = 0420 + 0113 = 0533z (TAF B indicates alt required from 0530z)
Alternate Bravo to Charlie
ETA B = 0533z
TAS = 170; TW = 5; GS = 170+5 = 175kt
Dist = 54; GS = 175 kt;
ETI = 54/175 = 0.31 hr = 19 min = 0019
Alternate Fuel = 0.31 x 20 = 6.2 usg
ETA C = ETA B + ETI = 0533 + 0019 = 0552z (TAF C indicated 30 holding from 0030z to 0630z)
Holding Fuel = 0.5 x 15 = 7.5 usg
Fuel Calculation
Start & Taxi = 3 usg
Trip Fuel = 24.3
VR = 10% of trip fuel = 2.4 usg
Alt Fuel = 6.2 usg
Holding @ C = 7.5 usg
FR = 0.75 x 20 = 15 usg
Min Fuel @ start up = 3+24.3+ 2.4+6.2+7.5+15 = 58.4 = 59 usg
Note:
1) VR is now 10% of trip fuel
2) Trip fuel does not include fuel from the destination to the alternate.
