Hi,
If I am conducting a flight under the IFR can I recalculate my LSALT after making a positive VISUAL fix ? For example I cross a high mountain range on the coast before heading out on a long ocean flight. If I visually identify the mountain range and coast and note that I am well out over the ocean can I recalculate my LSALT to a much lower level ?

There would be no reason why you couldn't do that. In these days of GPS you could either break the leg in your flight plan into two segments based on a fix or even recalculate the LSALT in flight after passing a positive fix.
