Hey Team Tait,
Just finished a practice exam with this question.
You have been cleared to fly the RWY 14 LOC approach into Oakey. If you do not become visual the point at which you must commence a missed approach is -
Select one:
a. at .5 DME not below 1890 feet
b. when you reach .5 DME at 1890 feet
c. when you reach 1540 feet
d. at .5 nm not below 1990 feet Incorrect
Looking at the "most correct" answer and as the question doesn't state explicitly you have actual QNH, the MAPt at Oakey for the RWY 14 LOC is 0.4nm (DME) and 0.5 (THR). So you can execute a MAPt at 0.5nm, I don't think you "Must"
I'm not sure if I'm interpreting the plate incorrectly (there was no GNSS when I last flew approaches!) or I've picked the second least bad answer.
What am I missing?
The question says that you have been cleared for the approach so you must have been given the actual QNH. The LOC MDA is 1990 feet and you can take 100ft off that since you have the actual QNH and the box is shaded. [AIP ENR 1.5 para 5.3.2]. You can descend to 1890 feet.

The missed approach point for the LOC approach is .5nm DME at the waypoint. A LOC approach is a non precision approach, so if you arrive at the MDA of 1890ft before the missed approach point, you can fly level to the missed approach point before commencing the missed approach if it is necessary.
Thanks Stuart - I must be missing something here, I'm happy with the MDA assumptions.
It's the MAPt point (distance) I am confused by.
The current Oakey MAPt is 0.4NM DME? The question in the exam says 0.5NM DME. The MAPt looks to be 0.5NM (is that a GNSS or DME point??) I'm trying to understand how it can be .4 and .5 DME at the same point!!

Is this 0.4 DME at the MAPt?
Yes, it should be .4DME which is .5nm from the threshold. I suspect that the chart has changed since the question was written. We have amended it to read .4DME.
Hi Bob,
This question has yet to be fixed.
The options presented in March 2021 are:
a. at .5nm not below 1990'.
b. at .5DME not below 1890'.
c. when you reach .5DME at 1890'.
d. when you reach 1540'.
Not a single option is exactly correct.
The MAP is defined as the MM, which is 0.4 to the OK DME, 0.5nm to the 14 THR.
I know that I can subtract 100' from the grey scaled MDA because of the ATIS, however the MAP is defined by a lateral position. In choosing option (a) I chose the lateral position, versus the lowest altitude that I can descend to when presented with the choice of options.

G'day
The question has been amended as of today
Cheers
Hi Stuart,
I think this question needs updating again.
From my DAPS I'm getting MAPt(LOC):
0.7nm IOK DME
0.5nm RWY 14 THR
