G'day Bob,
I've done a couple of the exams in the textbook as well as on the AFT practice cyber exams and I keep getting the calculation of descent rates for ILS approaches wrong. I understand the theory behind the rule of thumb of 5 x your GS, however why is this answer so different compared to the table in DAPS, which is what I have been using and therefore getting the wrong answer?
100 kts, 3 degrees
Rule of thumb - 5 x 100 = 500 fpm
DISREGARD - ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION
Hi Dan,
When using the DAP table, be careful that you are not looking the wrong figure. 3.0% instead of 3.0°.
3.0° @ 100kts will give you about 550fpm.
3.0% @100kts will give you 300fpm.
And of course, there will be a "come in spinner!" answer for going off the wrong one.
Hope this Helps.
Mister W.
EDIT - I see you found the problem.
Hey Mister,
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, literally 5 minutes after posting I took a closer look and realised the error in my ways.
Cheers,
Dan
