Hi everyone :)

I'm on the verge of stepping into the aviation world—something I've dreamed about for a long time. I’m highly motivated and fully understand the level of commitment and cost involved in becoming a commercial pilot. I've prepared myself mentally and financially, and I've even come to terms with what might be considered a late start—I’m 46 years old now :)

After doing a lot of research, I still have a few questions that I’d love to hear some experienced advice on. If anyone here has been through this journey or has some wisdom to share, I’d really appreciate it.

1. Choosing a Flight School – TAFE Ultimo vs. Others in Sydney
I'm based in Sydney and have been considering the Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence - Aeroplane) course offered by TAFE NSW (Ultimo campus). It's very convenient for me location-wise. The theory classes are delivered at Ultimo, while the practical flying is conducted through Basair at Bankstown. The full course takes around 18 months and costs around $143,000, including the Instrument Rating. It’s VET loan eligible.
Alternatively, I could enrol directly with Basair in Bankstown for the entire course. However, I’m unsure how to properly assess the quality of different schools. Any tips on how to evaluate a flight school?

2. Theory First – Self-Study with Bob Tait in QLD
I’ve also looked into doing the theory component separately through Bob Tait’s school in Queensland. From what I understand, it’s possible to complete CPL theory in about 3 months with focused study. I’m prepared to temporarily relocate to Queensland and cover the costs myself, avoiding a VET loan altogether.

Is it realistic to complete the full CPL theory component in 3 months at Bob Tait?
Are there any additional or hidden costs I should be aware of when going down this path?

3. Practical Flight Training Costs
Assuming I complete the theory separately, what sort of cost should I expect for the practical flight training component afterward? My understanding is around 200 hours are required for the CPL.

Any insight into current hourly rates and total expected costs for flying hours would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for your guidance and shared experiences—especially from those who’ve gone down the same road or trained later in life like me. I’m really looking forward to joining the aviation community!
Thank you:)

I am really struggling with air law. After 5 exams already this is by far the most difficult. I just can’t seem to work out how to study it.

But then adding to my frustration is when I come across error or perceived errors…

Question 10 in chapter 1: how many times you say Mayday and the Callsign.
I picked answer B, mayday 3 times, then call sign once. This is shown in the ersa emergencies and the aip. But the answer in the book is A.

This is not the only mistake or issue I’m having but just finding it impossible to study then getting thrown curve balls to try figure out.

I still think it’s B, not A . Does someone care to explain otherwise?

I have two lessons left in my RPL syllabus before I can go for my flight test. I was just wondering if anyone has some useful tips in order to prepare for the RPL flight test from those who have done it before, and possibly some information regarding the oral component before the flight test itself if applicable. I was told a while back that on the same day of the flight test, the examiner will ask you questions about aircraft systems, engines, etc. Also that I may have to draw an engine diagram up for the examiner... Has anybody had any experience with this? Thanks everyone

I hope you're all doing well! I'm currently juggling my flying lessons and studying for my theory exams, and I was wondering if anyone has some tips or advice on how to balance the two effectively? I have been through this article ccsp exam preparation and it's quite important for me to balance the time.

I've been finding it a bit challenging to manage my time between getting enough flight hours and hitting the books. How do you guys plan your study schedule around your flying lessons? Any specific strategies or routines that have worked for you?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions!

Best Regards,

But it's frustrating that I can't figure out how they got so smart with their simulation/aircraft/aviation knowledge.

I want to be there, but I don't know where to start or how long it will take before I become as knowledgeable as half of you are now.

I'm strongly considering purchasing one of the FS Academies, possibly a VFR. Do you have any feedback on this? Or are there good YouTube channels to train beginners?

In the introduction to this book (Dec 2021), fuel in the final answer should be rounded up.
On working through this exercise I note that the rounding is undertaken at an intermediary step.
While my answers are approximately the same, which is the correct method?
Example 2:
204min from A to B (65% power) + 60 min holding at B (35% power)
204/60*28=95.2G
If rounded now to 96G (96*1.1) +15 + 3 +17.2=140.8G or 141g
If rounded later (95.2*1.1) +15 + 3 +17.2=139.9G or 140g
Is the difference significant for a correct exam answer?
Thanks

It might help in your desire for useful comments, were you to provide a detailed list of what you have done, previously, to prepare yourself for the examinations. The exams, in themselves, are not all that difficult, so it follows that, in all likelihood, there may be gaps in your preparation which need to be addressed ?

Presuming that you have completed your PPL, the CPL work just goes a little bit further into some of the technical details. If you can pass PPL, then CPL should not present a major problem.
