As the question reads in my text book

When carrying out a rate one turn onto north in the southern hemisphere, the pilot should roll out of the turn on a heading of approximately:

a) 000'M
b) 015'M
c) 345'M
d) 010'M

The answer in the book is given as c with the explaination that:

The compass is "nippy on north". During a turn the compass indicates north before the aircraft achieves the actual heading of North. You should roll out of the turn 15' after north i.e. 315'C

From my understanding that is supposed to read 015'M meaning that c is incorrect and b is actually the correct answer.

I may be wrong, which now im left second guessing myself.

My exam is coming in the coming days and id appreciate if you could just clarify that for me 🙂

Thanks again guys

Madox

The questions actually says that you are turning LEFT onto north. That means that you are approaching north from the east. Because the compass indicates that you are on north before you have actually achieved that heading, it is necessary to continue the turn beyond the point where the compass indicates north. That means that you will have to continue the left turn through to the western side of north.

It is not possible to give an exact allowance to make for this overshoot because it depends on the angle of bank, rate of turn and even the latitude at which the turn is made. However in Australian latitudes for turns of about rate one, an overshoot by an amount approximately equal to your angle of bank works pretty well. That is, for a 15° bank turn, allow about 15° of overshoot.

Roll out on a heading of about 345° on the compass and, once the wings are level, the compass will settle down to indicate north.

Thankyou so much for that clarification bob

That totally makes sense and i shouldve realised that you are turning left and approaching it from the East....Guess i should take into account that anti clockwise does exist 😛

Thanks for getting back to me on that so quickly 🙂 I hope the exam is a successful 1 just leaving performance and Airlaw and IREX

Hi Madox,

I don't understand how 345 is the correct answer over 15?
The question does not stipulate the direction your heading
Before the turn. ONUS, if your turning from WEST to NORTH
Would you not roll out at 15? I see two correct answers, how
Do you know your turning from EAST to NORTH I'm confused
Because the question you provided does not say you are turning
Left onto north?

Cheers!

If you're turning left onto north, you must be approaching north from the east. If you are turning right onto north, you must be approaching north from the west.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your reply Im still confused how you know your
Turning left? I think I'm missing something in Madox's question.

Understand.

Thank you. 😉

Maybe the wording of Madox's question is incomplete. You are correct, it would be impossible to answer the question if the direction of turn was not given in the question text. No examiner would ask the question without stipulating the direction of turn.
