Hi

I had my flight test instructor ask what the definition is of a populous area when it's referred to in CAR 157 low flying

CAR 157 Low Flying
(1) An aircraft must not fly over:
(a) any city, town or populous area, at a height lower than 1000 feet;

Thanks

There is no specific definition of a populous area in the CASA document so I have no idea what it means. I guess it would be up to a magistrate to decide in court. One thing is worth noting though. A built-up area would most likely be considered to be a populous area, but there would likely be other areas that would be considered to be populous. For example a crowded beach, a sporting event with spectators, the snow fields during the ski season. These are likely to be considered populous areas even though they may not necessarily be 'built up'.
Not too sure about my backyard BBQ though!
